The Story of Dorothy Lane Market®

On August 12, 1948 Calvin D. Mayne and Frank Y. Sakada opened the original Dorothy Lane Market¨ as a fruit stand on the corner of Dorothy Lane and Far Hills Avenue. The receipts for the Þrst day of business totaled $35.00. In spite of many hardships, hard work enabled the partners to expand their business and, in August of 1953, Dorothy Lane Market¨ was moved to its present location at 2710 Far Hills Avenue. Major remodeling fol- lowed in 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998. A second store at Washington Square was opened in 1991. A third store in Springboro opened in 2002.

Cal Mayne was probably the best known independent grocer in the United States Ñ maybe even the world. He traveled extensively in this country and abroad speaking to grocers and other retailers about his business philoso- phy and practices that made Dorothy Lane Market¨ so successful. Mr. Mayne summed up his beliefs by saying, ÒMy methods are merely common sense and a deep concern for human beings. The secrets are how you price your goods, the productivity of your personnel, and how you care for their welfareÉwith tremendous emphasis on community service. Most important of all, unceasing attention to public goodwill.Ó These sound business practices enabled Mr. Mayne to Þght the big chains and win. Ownership of Dorothy Lane Market¨ remains in the Mayne family.

Dorothy Lane Market¨ is recognized throughout the country as one of the leading independent grocery stores. Its reputation has attracted visiting grocers from around the country and from as far away as Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Common mistakes

  1. Incomplete Personal Information: Failing to provide all requested personal details, such as middle name or complete address, can lead to delays or a rejection of the application.

  2. Not Specifying Education: Omitting details about educational history, including the name of the school and years attended, can leave important gaps in the application.

  3. Incomplete Employment History: Listing only partial work history without details about roles and reasons for leaving can create uncertainty for the reviewer.

  4. Skipping Age Confirmation: Forgetting to answer the question about age can raise questions about eligibility for employment.

  5. Failure to Review Application: Not reviewing the application for spelling and grammatical errors might create a negative impression on the employer.

  6. Not Authorization to Check Background: Failing to grant permission to check references or employment history can hinder the application process.

  7. Ignoring Criminal History Disclosure: Not disclosing a criminal record when asked can result in immediate disqualification from the hiring process.

  8. Inaccurate Availability Times: Providing vague or inaccurate availability could lead to scheduling conflicts later on, leaving a bad impression on your potential employer.

Documents used along the form

The DLM Application form is crucial for prospective employees at Dorothy Lane Market. Alongside this form, there are several other documents commonly required during the application process. These additional documents complement the application and provide further insight into a candidate's qualifications and background.

  • Resume: A resume summarizes a candidate's educational background, work experience, and relevant skills. This document allows applicants to present their qualifications in a structured format, highlighting achievements that align with the position sought.
  • Cover Letter: Often accompanying the resume, the cover letter provides an opportunity for candidates to express their interest in the position. It conveys their motivation for applying and outlines how their skills and experiences make them a suitable fit for the job.
  • Reference List: A reference list includes names and contact information for individuals who can vouch for the applicant's qualifications and work ethic. Typically, candidates provide previous supervisors or colleagues who can share insights into the candidate's capabilities and character.
  • Background Check Consent Form: This form gives the employer permission to conduct background checks on the applicant. It ensures that the organization complies with legal requirements while screening for criminal history or other pertinent information.
  • Employment Verification Form: This document is completed by previous employers to confirm an applicant's work history and job performance. It provides a way to validate the information presented in the application and references.
  • Skills Assessment: Sometimes required, a skills assessment evaluates the applicant's abilities related to the job. These assessments can include tests or practical demonstrations of relevant skills, ensuring the candidate meets the role's demands.

Using these documents together with the DLM Application form enhances both the applicant's profile and the organization's ability to make informed hiring decisions. Completing them accurately and thoroughly can significantly impact the interview process and overall employment outcomes.

Similar forms

The DLM Application form shares similarities with a job resume, both designed to present an individual's qualifications and experiences to potential employers. A resume typically lists work history, education, and skills in a concise format, while the DLM Application form expands on these areas, prompting candidates to provide detailed information about their employment history, educational background, and personal details. Each document serves as an essential tool in the hiring process, allowing employers to quickly assess whether a candidate might be a good fit for their organization based on relevant experience and qualifications.

Another document that aligns closely with the DLM Application form is an employment contract. While the application form serves to collect information to assess an applicant's potential for employment, an employment contract formalizes the terms and conditions if a candidate is hired. The contract outlines job responsibilities, salary, and work hours, and may also address issues such as confidentiality and termination. Both documents are integral to establishing the employer-employee relationship, though they function at different stages of the hiring process.

Similar to the DLM Application, a background check authorization form is also essential in the employment landscape. This form seeks consent from potential employees to conduct a background check, which can include aspects like criminal history, credit scores, and previous employment verification. The DLM Application prompts applicants to disclose any felony convictions, emphasizing the importance of transparency regarding one’s background. Both documents focus on due diligence and integrity in the hiring process while ensuring the employer has the necessary information to make informed hiring decisions.

A further document that resembles the DLM Application form is the equal employment opportunity (EEO) form. This form is typically filled out alongside job applications to promote fair hiring practices and collect demographic data for reporting purposes. Like the DLM Application, the EEO form addresses questions of personal information and is designed to ensure compliance with labor laws. Both documents reflect an organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and transparency in its hiring processes.

Lastly, the job offer letter bears some resemblance to the DLM Application form, although it is issued later in the hiring process. A job offer letter outlines the essential aspects of employment, such as salary, benefits, duties, and start date. The document marks the transition from an application phase, where information is gathered, to one where an offer is presented to a selected candidate. Both documents work towards establishing a mutual understanding between employer and employee, although one serves to invite and assess while the other affirms and formalizes the employment relationship.

Misconceptions

Misconceptions About the DLM Application Form

  • 1. "I don’t need to fill out all sections of the application." Some applicants think that a resume is enough. However, every section of the application is important for a complete picture of your qualifications.
  • 2. "My criminal record will automatically disqualify me." While a criminal record is noted, it does not mean you’ll be eliminated from consideration. Your circumstances will be taken into account.
  • 3. "I can apply even if I’m under 18." You must be at least 18 years old to apply. This requirement is clearly stated on the form.
  • 4. "I don’t have to provide employment history if I have a resume." Filling out the employment history section is necessary, even if you attach a resume. It ensures consistency and completeness.
  • 5. "It doesn’t matter when I last applied." The form asks if you've applied within the last year for a reason. It helps the company track your application history.
  • 6. "I don’t have to report gaps in my employment." It’s important to be honest about your employment history, including any gaps. Transparency is valued by employers.
  • 7. "If I check 'YES' on the criminal section, that’s the end of my application." Again, checking 'YES' does not automatically disqualify you. All relevant factors will be considered.
  • 8. "The application process is redundant; I’ve already communicated my qualifications elsewhere." Each application serves as a formal request and provides crucial information required by the company.
  • 9. "I can specify my availability later." You should outline your availability in the application. Clear communication about your schedule is crucial for potential hiring decisions.
  • 10. "The company won't contact my references if I don’t give consent." The application requires you to agree to reference checks. This consent is necessary to move forward in the hiring process.
